Interesting Mind Trick

Let’s talk about cravings. Say you had a very bad craving to
chocolate. You just had to have it all the time… and you found
it tough to resist if it was put in front of you. Problem: it’s
unhealthy! You don’t want to put on a bunch of pounds.
What do you do? It’s actually simple. Make the craving of
chocolate more pleasurable than the EATING of chocolate.
Here’s what I mean – it’s very easy to LINK two seperate
stimuli together. For example, looking at the picture of
a loved one will make you FEEL good…
Looking at a picture of someone you HATE will make you
feel bad. Cause -> Effect.
Right now the chocolate is the cause, and the effect
is complusion to eat it. Can you change cause -> effect?
Yes.
One way you could do that is every time you think
of chocolate, you think about being tortured by
150 midgets.
Heh. You COULD do that, and if you did you’d have
a very specific new feeling associated with chocolate…
PAIN, not pleasure.
Personally I don’t like that approach. I am into
feeling good as much as possible. I’m into
trading in pleasure for EVEN MORE pleasure.
So what you do is associate the CRAVING of chocolate
to something very pleasurable… like an orgasm
Now think of what happens if you do this – each
time you get the craving of chocolate, you feel
real good… and what happens if you eat
the chocolate?
You’ve just RUINED your “better” pleasure. Cool, huh?
It’s HARD to stop compulsions. It’s much easier
to link new feelings to certain behaviors….
that as a BY PRODUCT… stop your limiting
habits.
Example – One of my “competitive advantages” in
IM is my TONALITY. I learned this from modeling
Tony Robbins.
I first become aware of this when I was reading reviews
off his Personal Power audio series on amazon.com.
Over and over again people talked about how pleasant
his voice was to listen to… Hmmmn!? That SOUNDED
like something to learn.
So what I DID was simple – I’d get myself into a
very EXCITED state… and then for a minute I’d
speak like Tony.
Then I’d break state… and do it again. Pretty soon
it became fun to talk like Tony (tonality wise).
Then it became so linked it is now a habit.
You hear the PASSION in my voice. You hear how
much fun I have doing what I do. How exciting
it is… how much I care about teaching.
Now guess what that does!? It makes it even more
enjoyable for me. You get me on a webinar and
you say, “damn, Jason sounds upbeat, excited
and passionate for the whole 2 hours!”
Most people don’t feel that much passion in 2
weeks!
You see me speak on stage and you say, “whoa,
Jason SMILED the whole 90 minutes.”
Most people don’t smile 90 minutes a whole
week!
And I get PAID better than doctors and lawyers
to do this stuff!
Do you think it’d be smart to use the “voice”
technique yourself? You bet.
One last example. The keys. The sound of the
keyboard keys being pressed down. The sound
of typing. The FEEL of the keys on your fingers
as they press down.
Wouldn’t it be very great to link a very powerful
feeling to hearing and pressing and typing
with your computer keyboard?
Yes… Here’s how you do it – you think vividly
in your mind about a time when everything was
working in your favor, you were on, you were
in a state of unshakable confidence and
peak productivity… and the happiest you’ve ever
been in your life.
Go ahead and think about the state – basically
the best state you’ve ever experienced in
your life.
Get in that state again. Then sit down and
type a sentence.
Now clear your mind. Breathe out. Breath in…
Okay you should be back in your normal state now…
And now GO BACK into that best state you’ve
ever been in.
Now type two sentences.
Dear god whatever you do, don’t repeat this with
three sentences… or four sentences… and don’t
do this every day for the next week before you
start your work day…
Because then you might feel good almost all the
time… and that’s now how the world is supposed
to work is it?
At least that’s what everyone who is LESS happy
than I am tells me.
Oh well.

I do agree with all the ideas you have presented in your post. They are very convincing and will definitely work. Thanks for the post.
Jason thank you for the re-motivation to use NLP. I do follow Tony Robbins and love him; love his stuff. I have also been digging around to find more of Milton Erickson’s works and have also found Richard Bandler’s works to be very interesting. They are pioneers in NLP.
Jason as always, you over-deliver and I really appreciate your style.
ps. Congrats on the safe arrival of your lovely new daughter!
Peggy
You are hilarious! I love it – “what would happen if you did this every day….” Well, you’re on! And your switching the pleasure factor is brilliant – thank you for that – I’m going to do it today!
aloha -
Angela
Definitely agree with what we stated. Your explanation was certainly easy and simple to recognise. I say to you, I usually get irked when folks discuss problems that they plainly are not aware of about. You managed to hit the nail directly on the head and explained out everything without complication. Maybe, people will take a signal. May be back to obtain additional. Thanks.
I’ll tell you what. This is exactly the message/lesson I needed to hear, read rather. I’ve been in a mental slump. And I’ve been getting the torture from the midgets.
I really like the approach you have outlined. And you can believe I’ll be giving it 120% of my effort. Maybe effort is the wrong word. Sounds to much like work.
This is the first time I visited “48 Hour Report”. I will be returning often.
Egads. I tried it, but I’d rather eat chocolate and get fat than get the hots and be unable to work. I’ll try associating chocolate with ice tea and let you know how it goes.
Jason, Thanks for this one! I might have to try that.Keep the interesting and informative content coming
Nice post. However, I had a cake calling my name and now all I can think of is 150 midgets attacking me. I feel like jackass gone bad! The midgets, the midgets, help!!!
Tony Robbins idea was a little less fun but a little mentally safer. NLP really does work and I have used Tony’s techniques throughout the years.
Amusing post, and most of it is quite inspirational.
Now, how do I get these midgets out of my head?
Cheers,
Colin
Hi Jason, I printed your article and have it on my wall next to my computer. I am enthusiastic the minute I roll my chair up to the desk and settle in to get a good day’s work done!
Jan
P.S. Miss your voice now that the membership webinars are over.
[Jan - Remember when I freaked everyone out during lunch at olive garden that day with my pattern interrupts and hypnosis stuff. That was awesome.]
Hi Jason
I typed so fast that my fingers hurt
I really like your energy
Best wishes
Mike
[Mike - Thanks Mike! I learned the technique from a milton erickson transcription – he was actually only doing it to improve someone’s type writer speed, but I figured why not anchor happiness to it?
]
Hey Jason,
That was a really interesting article
and is something that I have been self
participating in for a while……
….unbeknown to me!
I thought I was just going a little funny
in the head!
Great work Jason I am so happy i am
not the only one!
Best Wishes

Charming delivery as usual, with spiritual depth and connection. I was surprised to receive your email announcing your blog post since I had seconds ago posted about Speed of Implementation my blog about and linked to your report on Taking Action!
[Julia - Synchronicity! Thanks for spreading the free report, I appreciate it.
A lot of what I learned about inner tonality came from my days as a monk when we’d meditate for hours at a time – it really shows how to control the “voices” and images inside your mind. Helpful for internet marketing!]
Great post. NLP rocks, you can use it for so many things!
@Norman: Thanks for that link for the interview, kewl!
@Donna: There are specific NLP techniques for addictions, and I like to use EFT as well (http://emofree.com). The emofree website is about to go offline (the founder is going to retire) so remember to go there now and download the free manual etc. There is a vidoe about smoking on the front page, and lots of smoking related sessions (all free accessible). You’ll manage, that’s for sure – just have to know how! Debi’s remark is true too, that’s a vital part of the mindset you want.
Thanks so much Jason for sharing this – good reminder for me too!
Charlotte
[Yea that interview with Norman was a blast!
I also use EFT as well Charlotte. I have a funny stuff about a cab drive from the dallas airport where I was a bit hungover… and thought I was going to throw up… so I started doing EFT in the cab – the driver thought I was crazy but at least I didn’t get sick!
]
Well Jason for some women chocolate is better than an orgasm
[Susanne - haha – I was WAITING for someone to say that!]
Jason,
I am familiar with this technique and know it by the name Anchoring Yourself To Success.
I’ve used it for years and it works sweet! I first discovered it in BottomLine Personal Newsletter.
Peace & Prosperity,
JB
P.S.) Grab your fre’e copy of my STOP CANCER COLD report with FRE’E GIVEAWAY RIGHTS at Google.com. Clcik your way to the knols category. Then run a search by title making sure to use all caps.
I guarantee you will want this resource on hand when a loved one battles cancer.
[Yep Jerry, that’s all it is – anchoring. And not even very sophisticated anchoring, that’s why I like it. Simple but effective!]
Jason,
You’re great with presentation! I’ve heard you speak in one of those webinars lately and I can feel the passion you have of your work. You over-deliver and surpass peoples expectations when you speak as you have done here.
This article is also full of great advice and techniques to rid oneself of any addiction.
Tony Robins is a one of a kind person to learn from. He has so much positive energy to go around. It is really inspiring to hear him speak.
Thanks you Jason!
John
]
[Thanks for your kind comments John. I wish more people whose webinars I attend learned to use tonality more – sometimes the info is good, but so boring!]
Hey Jason:
great piece,, so true,, I noticed your tonality at Jeff Mills (Boost Seminar), its a real winner,, good luck this coming week in Vegas, and say hi to Rachel, as I wasn’t able to come..
“talk like an egyption” HAHA..
Talk soon,, George Forsythe sends..
[Sweet George! Wish you could be in Vegas, it will be cool to see Rachel, she’s a great speaker.]
I prefer to call it “making a choice” rather than “using a mind trick,” but I agree humans have the power to change their experience by consciously choosing to think differently about something; that we can make pain subside and even create a sensation of pleasure in its place simply by choosing our thoughts.
It’s simple: Consciously choose the experience you desire and then actively support — through your thoughts, words and deeds — your consciousness’ ability to create that experience. As Willie the Shake said, “There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.”
To Donna re: her nicotine addiction question: when I learned to manage my nicotine addiction (almost nine years ago after 30+ years as a smoker), I shifted my view of not smoking from one of “depriving myself” to one of “honoring my Self” and then later even began to think of “not smoking” as “smoke freedom.” As I continued the practice, I shared those thoughts and experiences with others who were just beginning on the path to smoke freedom (via the American Lung Association’s online forum), thereby reinforcing my feelings of pleasure (by helping others). It’s also important, I think, to view making changes such as this as a process rather than an event. (I highly recommend working through the ALA’s program, btw.)
It’s nice to hear from you, Jason, and I hope all is well with you and yours!
[Debi – hehe. Yeah the “mind trick” is just a bit of marketing to get attention. When I work with clients personally, my goal is to enlarge their CHOICES… because when presented with two choices, people almost always pick the best one. You can get paid a lot just knowing how to do this. If you show someone how to respond to something in a better way, they will naturally just do THAT.]
Another thing I’ve forgotten and someone reminds me. It’s hard to keep track of these things, but I can relate. I used to (try to) write songs but had no success with that endeavor. The way I relate to this is I used to get in this “state” where I could write a song in my mind in the style of Elton John or whoever I was listening to at the time. Sometimes it would happen just before I woke up or as I was driving in the car. Only trouble was I forgot it as soon as I woke up or when I got home. It’s a great feeling when everything “flows” and I remember that feeling well.
[Ryan – I can REALTE as a song writer. An NLP technique I use when composing is to picture myself “stepping into” the musician(s) who i want to use for inspiration for the particular piece I’m writing]
Just over 166 years since the Promised One came (and on the very DAY that the electronic era was ushered in, dit-da duty!) and knowledge has multiplied like life itself, giving us people like Jason to lead, pioneer, guide, encourage and blaze new trails for us…
Thanks again, Jason!
Hey Jason. this stuff is so good I would be very happy having your permission to translate it into Spanish and send it to mi list.
Can I?
You’ll have the whole credit. By all means.
[Victor – by all means! You have my permission!]
I absolutely love your stuff!! Thanks!
Peace,
Jill
Thanks for the tips Jason. I’d really love to be able to have that excitement come through in my voice like you and other cool marketers/speakers. Something to work on.
Stuart Stirling
Hi Jason,
I was wondering if this is similar to the NLP technique you advertise in your “7 Minutes 1 Article” product, where you supposedly typed for 6 hours straight feeling immense pleasure the entire time? I’ve been curious as to how you do this because if I didn’t know better, I would have thought it was some form of self-hypnosis that requires an immense amount of concentration.
Cheers,
-Johnson.
[Johnson… hehe I love the “supposedly” mark. Still suspicious, huh?
Yes, this was one of many techniques I’ve used to write for hours on end… for example I believe it was two days ago I wrote over 20,000 words in a single day for a client. No sane person can do that without some tricks such as the one in this blog post… I also use other anchors and other techniques as well… that when combined together form a powerful system.
Self-hypnosis is part of the deal. Also, the fact i was a monk for years DOES help for some one of the same reasons I talked about in the blog post – I can go into state VERY easily because I’ve had practice.]
Jason I think you are great! Mind concept is what more neg people
need to pratice, think of a better way to deal with neg situations!
[Cornell – Thanks! I agree. The world would be a better place if must people just tried to be motivated by PLEASURE instead of to avoid pain!]
You definitely have a knack for simplifying things, Jason. Is there a program you’ve produced, or could recommend, that delves into this concept a little more? I’d like article writing/marketing to be associated with pleasure.
[Jack – my best program for this is Instant Expert Technology, which you can check out by clicking here.
It breaks down my step by step process for building systems to achieve whatever I want to achieve]
Hey Jason… I thought it would be fun to let everyone hear you talk excitedly for an hour, so I have linked my name (above) directly to the audio interview that we did a couple of weeks ago, by-passing any opt-in page.
So anyone reading this can have immediate free access to that great interview that you kindly did with me.
Glad to hear you are still as crazy as ever, and may your enthusiasm rub off on everyone who reads your blog.
Thanks amigo,
Norman Austin
http://interviewcom.com
[Norman – that interview was FUN! I recommend people check it out. You can hear some excellent tonality at work there!]
Jason,—— you ever bump your head?
[my response: I bump it into great ideas all time!]
Jason,
This is a very interesting (post) approach to changing one’s habits from bad to good. I like the way you explain things and your ‘voice’ is different than a lot of other marketer’s.
I think anyone can make a change for the better if they have the two things they really need, belief in themselves and the core desire to make the change.
You’ve just given everyone that reads your post the road map that will make their journey a lot easier.
Thanks,
Ernie Hodge
[my response: Thanks Ernie. You're right - the hardest part is not the technique, but having the "courage" to just try it a few times
]
Hi Jason
The infectious enthusiasm that you exude in all your training videos has always impressed and inspired me.
On top of that your ability to systematize every possible task turns a chore into a delight.
I still return to the earlier training that I purchased from you, the reason being that it never dates.
Now that’s value for money and being a Scotsman I know about these things
Onwards and upwards.
Ian (Jason Fan Club Life Member) McLaren
PS I think you sound more like Tony than he does
[my response: Ian - thanks for your post. I love the sign off name and the PS, too! A mentor said to me once it's not just what you know, it's how you feel about what you know. I try to make people feel as good as possible when consuming my info... and I encourage everyone to do the same!]
In the specific case of food, it’d be best to remove the object of craving all together. I read a study in just the last week that showed the act of craving itself causes an insulin spike.
Hi Jason,
spot on. we are what we eat and we become what think.
For every road we travel, there is an equal road to return.
warm regards
Gerry Kenny
Jason,
This is a very interesting post. I really like easy it would be to make changes by association. More outside the box thinking and some excellent points.
I never thought about the tonality of someone’s voice but have noticed that you are extremely excited and happy when you do webinars. I really look forward to your webinars and it’s obvious you really enjoy teaching people and interacting.
Associating the pleasure with the craving, or the action you wish to motivate yourself with. That’s brilliant. I’ll have to try some of these techniques. Thanks for your excellent advice.
Take care, I’m going for some chocolate now. Patrick
[my response: The real secret to great outward tonality is great inner tonality. I speak to myself the same way I speak on webinars - that's one of the reasons I get so much done!]
Jason, I just gave you a lesson in basic behavior and the myth of the mind. (We do not have one). Without knowing your educational background it could be very misleading and not veru useful. So it is gone and so am I.
Take care
James
[my response - shoot, I'd have love to seen it. I am a two time college drop out
]
Jason-
I must be schizofective or something because
when taking a shower and using ‘Axe Dark Tempation’ shower gel,
last night,
I looked at the label on the back.
It reads,
“The scent of Axe Dark Tempation is as irresistble as
chocolate. Use Dark Tempation in every shower
and she’ll turn into a maneater…
How Dirty Boys Get Clean.
Experience the Axe Effect
The Axe Effect may result in,
but is not limited to,
unrelenting female attention
and/or late nights.”
Whoever gets to write the copy
for that product is a genius.
In the directions ‘manual’
it shows an illustration
of “Steps”.
Step 1 has a pic of a shower head
Step 2 has an illustration of a man with a woman on each arm.
I got to thinking.
It’s common knowledge a great portion of women
crave
chocolate.
Now they’ve linked the ‘cravings’ of the user’s desire
to the user’s desire’s ‘object of desire’ and then took
it a step further…
Gave instructions showing the pleasurable
end-result as an actual step of the process
of using it. LOL.
Now, you have to realize the first time
I read this label was last night, about midnight, shortly
before going out to meet a friend of the female persuasion
for some great conversation and a bite to eat.
I remember kind of chuckling to myself heading out the door
for the rendez-vous to see if the compulsive chocolate craving desires would elicit a true ‘axe effect’ when the
rubber meets the road.
You’re right.
There’s something to leaving something
to the imagination which can be even more
powerful than the act itself.
That’s what I takeaway from the craving something
being more pleasurable than the act itself, once realized.
Now, on to getting in an exciting state and talking like Tony.
LOL.
Several years ago, you remember that movie swingers?
So I watch it and see myself as Vince Vaughan’s character.
You don’t want to be that nice ‘friend’ talking about
puppy dogs and ice cream who everyone ‘really hopes gets the girl.’
No, you want to be that Rated R guy who you’re not too sure
if you like him yet or not,
but one thing you know for sure.
He’s bad.
But I digress.
LOVE the way you put it in your post.
I’ll have to go back and read it again.
Just sort of ‘letting it flow’ to express
my initial feelings and takeaways to your post
in this comment now without putting on the ‘editor’s cap’
so bear with me.
Ever watch Rocky and then want to go out and box professionally?
Or watch clips of Michael Jordan or Pistol Pete Maravich
and just ‘get in the zone’?
If you’re not careful, you’ll find yourself
in a boxing ring and sleeping with a basketball!
Killer stuff man.
Was just cruising your blog one day this week
and am thrilled to read the update!
Enough for now, thanks for all you do.
Peace
[my response: Doug! That is interesting copy, coming from outside of the norm. I like it. That's the idea behind most instituional advertising - to create an ASSOCIATION between two things - think beer and bikini-clad women. Usually it doesn't work that good, but the Axe example is better than most. I've never seen swingers sadly. Amazon does deliver gifts... HINT, HINT hehe... ]
Really funny you should say all that because I’ve thought that when I’ve always thought that you come across well in your audio’s a webinars. One that springs to mind was on Copywriting (I think) and you had really bad nasal congestion and had to see a doctor for some medication that works everytime. A good recorded webinar, quality information and you never sounded down at anytime despite being poorly.
Lesson learnt!
[my response - Allen, I remember that! I literally couldn't get out of bed all day and I couldn't even move or think... LOL... every fiber of me wanted to cancel the webinar because I was beyond sick... but somehow I just got enough energy sparked so I got on, and once I started I went into the state naturally... since I had conditioned it so much. And for the next hour I felt 100% fine. Intersting, huh? Of course when it was over I crashed hard!]
Love the demo, except that chocolate IS HEALTHY (at least it can be healthy) Since I market chocolate that is healthy I take exception to that statement. Otherwise, nice pattern.
[my response - I KNEW someone would point this out. Certain kinds are healthy, but probably no chocolate is healthy in OVER-excess, which is what compulsions are all about. Especially snickers chocolate bars
]
PROCRASTINATION is my killer habit.
So going to try to apply your mind technique to that Jason. If this mind trick works it will do wonders for my day … every day.
You also HIT the nail on th head re speaking ‘Passionately’ People pick up on enthusiasm very quickly. In my own TV show I try to do this, even though people refer to me as enjoyably ‘laid back’. (They like it)
But this Friday I’m going to talk about my ‘affair’ on my show. That should do it.
Wish me luck!
Jonathan
[my response - Jonathan, I recommend you DO this with procrastination. That's what I did and I pretty much eliminated it in short order. Also, 'laid back' can work if done properly, because it's a very soothing state to listen to... as long as it's not BORING!]
I always thought your voice sounded good. A little like Kermit the Frog, from the Muppet Show. And that’s a cool series.
For me, the moment that I return to in my mind when I want to feel really good is the moment when I had completed my first solo. I flew a circuit (I believe this is called a pattern in the states) at Cardiff International Airport with nobody in the right-hand seat (where the instructor normally sits).
I have my private pilot’s licence now, and I had to do a lot more solo work before I got it, but nothing beats that moment. Even passing the tests to get my licence.
I never really had a problem with chocolate, though.
[David - that's an excellent state to anchor to! I always tell people if they don't have a great state, then make one up. I have states I go into that I have never actually experienced except for only in my mind, and it still does the trick!]
Hi Jason,
I like your concept here… and since I also know you’re a health-minded person… could you specifically relate this NLP into something simple for stopping smoking? The craving for it is nearly robotic… and then I go smoke a cigarette and feel the relief. However, my doctor says I absolutely NEED to quit. After 45 years, that’s a lot easier said than done!
It’s not *quite* the same as chocolate cravings.
I like your tonality technique idea too! Thanks for a very interesting post as always.
Donna
[Donna - this is actually where I got the technique from - a hypnotist who helps people stop smoking. Now, full disclousre - I SMOKE. Yep. It's a habit I actually like enough to not one to quit yet. So keep that in mind. However, to quick smoking is actually very easy. Here's what to do. Find where the feeling of pleasure starts in your body. All feels start somewhere, and MOVE somewhere. So think of a time when you felt great pleasure, and notice where the feeling starts and where it moves. Then loop it around, make it spin faster and stronger. There you go. Next time you feel a craving, spin your pleasure energy and link it to the craving. Pretty soon you'll ENJOY the craving more than the smoke!]
Hey Jason “Naughty” Fladlien its true man. The first time you revealed this technique in the re-framing report you were not explicit. You said try associating writing with some ‘fun’ activities but I got the unspoken message.
I closed my eyes and visualized caressing a beautiful woman for a few seconds and imagined typing an article in my computer then again caressed and came back and saw myself holding a clickbank check. I wrote a few articles after that effortlessly and I earned commissions too.
[Marikja - hehe... Napoleon Hill wrote a whole chapter in think and grow rich on transforming sexual energy into money - it's a great chapter!]
More great practical tips from Bhakta Jason!!
Thanks I appreciate them and will put them into practice.
Regards,
Krsnendu
[Krsnedu - Haribol! Most of what I learned consciously after practicing bkahti yoga I realize was stuff I did unconsciously through bkahti. Especially the chanting - the inner tonality you get from that is amazing!]
Jason I love how you teach ‘behavior changes’ and have noticed a dramatic impact on my business through your audio products.
I’ve even had other people notice how fast I get things done, including ‘hard task’ like copywriting. I’ll definitely be trying the ‘tonality technique’ by listening to Tony Robbins and you of course
[Jeff - you are the man. It's exciting seeing your business grow and grow and i know you'll be a big name in no time!]
I can so relate to the chocolate, the orgasm and the midgets! I feel better already.
[Suzan - you're kind of midget yourself, aren't you?
]
Awesome insight Jason. You hooked me. I’m gonna try it.
I love the tonality one.. That is kick ass..
Thanks for the Jedi Mind Tricks J
Talk Soon
Gavin
Nice post Jason. I have used a few of these techniques and can definitively vouch for them. I think now I’m gonna pop in a Tony CD and start practicing his tonality.
